Weekend Projects That Boost Your Home's Value

Contrary to popular opinion, if you’re looking to improve the value of your home, all you need is a couple days off and some elbow grease.

You don’t have to empty your savings on a new kitchen, an extra room, or an added car spot for your garage in order to bump up your home’s overall value. Sometimes, the little things can make the biggest difference. Here are some ways you can take you home to the next level on a budget:

  • Clean, clean, clean

It’s not glamorous, but getting your home to sparkle takes only some patience and free time. If your home is considerably cluttered, consider renting out a storage unit for your extra belongings. Or, host a garage sale – you’ll be ridding yourself of stuff you don’t need, and netting yourself some spending money in the process. But no matter what you do, the end result will impress anyone.

  • Put a new finish on all things wooden

Over time, wood tends to get scratched and worn, and most people assume that this is the time to completely replace it. But no need – pick up some wood finish at your local hardware store, make sure you sand the surface effectively, and before long it will look better than brand new. Keep in mind that it isn’t the same process as simply painting something, however. Simple step-by-step guides online can be used to make the short process as easy as possible for you.

  • Lighting is important

When you want people to see your home, make sure they can see well. Replacing old or damaged light bulbs is a great way to make your home brighter, especially if you’re upgrading from those dull, fluorescent bulbs. Not to mention, the light bulbs that are designed to save energy are still affordable, so you’ll be saving money on both ends.

  • Make the garage an extra room

Not really – but sprucing up and cleaning out your garage of clutter and dust can give your home the illusion of having much more space that it actually does. If you need to, ask a friend or neighbor to lend you their driveway to store your car for the day – this way, you’ll be able to work with all the space the garage has without a car getting in the way. A sparkling clean garage can make a world of difference when you show your home, so use this to your advantage and break out the broom and dustpan.
