If it’s your first time buying or selling a home (or really any transaction that a real estate agent is guiding you on), don’t expect to know everything about the various processes and protocols – that’s what the agent is for.
But while you aren’t expected to be totally knowledgeable on the subject, knowing what makes a good real estate agent can work wonders to your advantage. Hiring someone who is experienced, eager, and hardworking can put more money in your pocket in the long run. Use these tips to snatch up the best real estate agent possible:
Meet agents at an open house
While the purpose of an open house is generally to show off a property to potential buyers, remember that the agent will be there as well, and sees it as a great opportunity to meet potential clients. You’ll be able to meet them outside their office, as well as get an idea of how they operate (what kind of presentation the open house is, how profession the work seems to be, etc.).
Make sure the agent has a good history
The longer an agent has been working, the more closings he or she likely has, and the more experience he or she can bring to the table.
But, don’t ignore a new guy
Experience is great, but don’t turn your back on someone who, while being new to the game, is incredibly motivated and willing to give 100% in order to make up for that fact. On the plus side, he or she will likely have few clients, so you’ll be getting the majority of the attention.
Find someone who has a solid web presence
In this day and age, more and more people are relying on the internet to find and sell homes. Picking up a real estate agent who is well-versed with these modern methods can give you a distinct advantage, as well as make it easier for you to find homes that fit your exact preferences.
Try to find someone who lives locally
Hiring an agent with local knowledge can be a big help. While you may or may not know much about where you’re moving, an agent who has spent time selling property throughout the area will have an intimate knowledge of things like nearby schools, low-crime areas, popular tourist areas, and much more.
